Measuring productivity in your practice or medical center

> How can productivity be measured?

Productivity is an indicator that measures efficiency, defined as obtaining maximum output using minimum resources.

Productivity is an indicator, which allows us to measure the efficiency of production for each factor or resource used, understanding by efficiency the fact of obtaining the best or maximum performance using a minimum of resources. If we go to the technique we could say that productivity is equal to the production obtained / Amount of factor used.

Now, how does productivity affect us in our office or health center?

It is common knowledge that what is not measured cannot be improved, so our goal will always be focused on improving services and customer service, as well as increasing customer satisfaction.

Traditionally, productivity is measured in medical centers in relation to the number of patients who have been seen or who have made an appointment, the speed of management, which does not necessarily translate into quality of care. At an economic level, it is traditionally measured by the cost of equipment, guards at peak hours or control over doctors' schedules, in order to see more patients in the established schedule.

Now, one of the practices used in the method above is to keep costs low and hire personnel strictly necessary, we can add to this the reduction of the schedule, although this type of limitations can reduce costs a little, they are not optimal to achieve the desired success.

In addition to this, it is important to mention that patient satisfaction is essential for the growth of your medical center, the higher the rate, the more inclined they will be to give positive opinions and recommend the service to family and friends, which has a direct impact on the notoriety of the organization, if on the contrary, if patient satisfaction is low then they will not recommend the place and will look for a new place to go another time.

So, if you want to measure the productivity of your medical center, it is important that you include hard and soft metrics, which consist of indicators such as time spent with patients, their cost, as well as measuring satisfaction, which we showed you how to measure in a previous article.

To improve productivity in your practice or medical center, the first things to consider are the productivity metrics described above, the frequency with which your patients return, reducing wait times, measuring whether or not their needs were met, and not focusing solely on the time of the patient's visit.

The second thing, which is important to mention is technology, it is a fact that digital transformation is here to stay, so technological tools will be a great help to improve some tasks. It must be considered that the time factor is crucial at this time, reducing the wait is fundamental, so the implementation of digital turneros to manage appointments, line admissions, digital prescriptions and attention through chatbot can collaborate with the constant improvement of the service.

Traditional methods are pioneers in measuring productivity, however, today we can use other indicators that will help us to have better accuracy, which will allow us to take action for continuous improvement, relying on digital tools that allow us to improve waiting times and maximize communications with the patient. Remember, the more satisfaction there is in your medical center, the better the productivity will be.
